Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Seminar Series

Wednesday, February 7, 2024

2:30 PM-3:30 PM

Lilliam Ambroggio, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado, & Director of Research, Sections for Emergency Medicine and Hospital Medicine, Children’s Hospital Colorado, will present "Resurgence of Mycoplasma pneumonia in children with pneumoniae."

This seminar will explore the recent resurgence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is the most commonly detected bacterial cause of pediatric CAP. The pathogen typically causes mild disease, however in recent years with the increase use of macrolide therapy, macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae which causes very severe disease has also increased. Similar to other pathogens, Mycoplasma pneumoniae seem to disappear during the pandemic, however a notable resurgence has started. Specifically this lecture will provide an overview of the epidemiology and transmission patterns of the bacterium, current management and diagnostic strategies, and future directions within this field. Dr. Lilliam Ambroggio is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado and the Director of Research for the Sections of Emergency Medicine and Hospital Medicine at Children’s Hospital Colorado. As a pediatric infectious disease epidemiologist, her research program focuses on improving the outcomes of children with common respiratory infections. She has had multiple federal and foundation grants supporting her research program.
