Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Dissertation Defense

Monday, November 27, 2023

3:00 PM-4:00 PM

Kevin Martinez-Folgar, MD, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, will defend his thesis "Urban Determinants and Disparities in Chronic Liver Disease."

My research navigates the influences of urban living and race/ethnicity on the health outcomes and mortality risks associated with Chronic Liver Disease (CLD). From a granular look at clinical markers within the U.S., I broaden the scope to highlight variations in mortality rates between Hispanic and non-Hispanic white populations across U.S. cities. I extend this narrative further by drawing parallels and distinctions with Latin American urban centers. In doing so, my work lays bare the multifaceted relationships between city life, race/ethnicity, and CLD.

Kevin Martinez-Folgar, MD, is a Guatemalan physician and researcher. He is also a PhD candidate in Epidemiology at Drexel University, with an MD from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala. Kevin’s research interests include clinical outcomes, urban determinants of health and health disparities in the U.S. and Latin America.
