Introduction to the UHC Data Portal: Focus on Measures of Residential Segregation
Wednesday, May 24, 2023
2:00 PM-3:30 PM
The UHC Research and Data Core is facilitating a workshop that aims to introduce researchers to the UHC Data Portal, with a specific focus on presenting three commonly utilized residential segregation measures found in the Dissimilarity Index, the Gini Index, and the Index of Concentration at the Extremes.
While measures of structural and institutional racism vary, residential segregation remains a consistent and often utilized measure to capture, at the neighborhood level, the continuum of disadvantage and privilege. Enabling researchers with this type of data to measure and map various health and social inequities, often with a specific eye towards placed-based solutions ranging from interventions and policies targeted at health equity, is key.
Workshop attendees will be introduced to the three measures for the city of Philadelphia, as well as shown the importance of conducting exploratory spatial data analyses utilizing such data.
Finally, workshop attendees will have an opportunity to have brief hands-on experiences in data access, analysis, and interpretation in a group based setting.
