People Using Behavior Economics to Improve Health
Wednesday, March 16, 2022
1:00 PM-2:00 PM
This Department of Health Management & Policy (HMP) and HMP Club Seminar features Mark Stehr, PhD, Professor and Chair at the Drexel LeBow College of Business with a secondary appointment in DSPH's HMP department.
About the seminar:
Traditional economics builds on the idea that people respond to incentives and seek ways to make themselves better off. Although this can be a good description of behavior in many cases (e.g., buying more of something when it goes on sale), it appears unconvincing in others. For example, people fail to save enough for retirement, skip preventive care, procrastinate, and engage in unhealthy behaviors such as smoking. In response, so called behavioral economists have turned to insights from psychology and other areas to enrich their models of human behavior and improve social welfare.
This talk will further describe the behavioral economic approach and describe some of its successes and failures in health and public policy.
