EPI/BIO Seminars Series: Computing and informatics: A perspective on innovative ways to gather health data
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics welcomes:
Gabriela Marcu, PhD
Assistant Professor, College of Computing and Informatics
Research Fellow, A.J. Drexel Autism Institute
The purpose of this talk is to bridge gaps between disciplines and engage in a conversation about the potential for using computing and informatics to empower the use of data by epidemiologists and biostatisticians. I will present some of my recent multidisciplinary collaborations with public health researchers, and share how together we have envisioned innovative new approaches to gathering data and answering questions of shared research interest. I will also provide a breadth of examples to illustrate how mHealth, texting, apps, smartphone sensors, and other technologies are increasingly utilized in research.
Gabriela Marcu is an Assistant Professor in the College of Computing and Informatics and a Research Fellow with the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute at Drexel University. She holds a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University, and a B.S. in Informatics from the University of California, Irvine.
Her research is in the areas of health informatics, behavioral intervention technologies, and data-driven decision-making for health promotion. She has been named a Siebel Scholar, NSF Graduate Research Fellow, Microsoft Research Graduate Women Scholar, and Google Anita Borg Scholar.
Lunch will be served.
