    On the evening of March 14, 38-year-old Marielle Franco, a black feminist, human rights activist, and local politician in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was assassinated after leaving the event "Young Black Women Moving Power Structures" in downtown Rio. Marielle was an outspoken critic of police brutality and the militarization of Black and poor communities in the city and advocated for policies that promoted racial and gender equality and basic human rights and dignity. The mass protests in Brazil sparked by her tragic death are a testament to her compassion, fearless activism, and commitment to standing with communities to advocate for radical social change.
