Abstract:
The rapid advancements in AI across academia and industry have been striking over the past decade. However, governmental institutions have been unaware or slow to adopt these technologies, and are typically confined to limited, isolated applications. The emergence and growing recognition of generative AI, especially ChatGPT, has sparked significant interest in these technologies within the government sector. This seminar will delve into the adoption of AI on the Federal level through the lens of the White House Office of Science Technology Policy (OSTP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) journey as they embraced and developed a larger strategy around AI and ML. I'll share my story around this regulatory and organizational shift, some of the initiatives that worked (and those that didn't!), and where I believe the Federal agencies have room to grow.
