Chemistry Seminar

Friday, April 10, 2026

11:00 AM-12:30 PM

Join us on Friday, April 10th at 11am for another installment of our Spring Chemistry Seminar Series!

Guest lecturer, Dr. Matthew Pelton, will be visiting from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), and present their talk, "Strong Light-Matter Coupling at the Nanoscale for Quantum Photonics".

Abstract:
Future quantum technologies are likely to rely on photons for the transmission of quantum information. Several developments will be needed before this can be realized, including the development of efficient sources of indistinguishable single photons and the demonstration of nonlinear-optical interactions at the single-photon level. In this talk, I will review some of the work in my research group towards these goals, based on the coupling between the states of single electrons in individual semiconductor nanocrystals and photons confined to nanometer-scale volumes by metal nanostructures. This coupling is of particular interest because it can be strong enough open up the possibility of quantum-photonic devices operating at room temperature.

Short Bio:
Matthew Pelton received a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1996 and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University in 2002.  Following postdoctoral positions at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and at the University of Chicago, he joined the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory, where he was a scientific staff member from 2006 until 2013.  In fall 2013, he joined the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he is now a Professor and Chair of the department.
