Chemistry Spring Seminar: A Physicist’s Toy in Chemist’s Hands

Friday, May 12, 2023

11:00 AM-12:30 PM

Join us on May 12th for our Weekly Chemistry Seminar! Guest Speaker, Dr. Michael Shatruk, will be joining us from the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Florida State University.

The concept of localized magnetic moments is well understood by chemistry community and even taught, albeit superficially, at the undergraduate level. In contrast, magnetism of systems with delocalized electrons have long remained the exclusive playground for physicists. In the last two decades, the rapid advancement of experimental and theoretical materials science, in particular solid-state magnetism, has led to extensive crossings of this interdisciplinary divide. In this contribution, I will provide a concise overview of chemical approaches to understanding metallic (itinerant) magnets and new insights into correlations between chemical bonding, electronic structure, and magnetism in such systems.

This week's seminar will be on Zoom only.
