Mother Baby Connections
Mother-Baby Connections is one of only a few intensive outpatient clinics of its kind in the United States, and the only one in the mid-Atlantic region. Unlike many other postpartum mental health clinics, the Drexel program emphasizes the mother’s relationships with her baby and partner, and encourages moms to bring their infants to therapy. Babysitting is provided for infants when moms need to participate in other activities.
Based on models common in Canada, Europe, United Kingdom, and Australia, Mother-Baby Connections provides an assortment of therapies, including creative arts therapy and dance movement therapy, as well as individual and couples counseling sessions that use evidence-based attachment approaches to treatment. The intensive multi-day program allows women to feel better quicker and to resume regular therapy at their usual pace after the program ends.
Moms can choose from a variety of therapies depending on what they need including:
- Individual Therapy
- Mother-baby interaction therapy
- Group Therapy
- Dance & Art Therapy
- Couples Therapy
- Trauma therapy
- Medication Evaluation
Mother-Baby Connections addresses four important areas — the role transition to becoming a mother, interpersonal communication, social isolation and the mental health symptoms women are experiencing. In addition, the program works on improving the attachment bonds between new mothers and their infants, partners, and families. Group therapies and counseling sessions give mothers safe outlets to express themselves, while also providing a community of mothers who are sharing the same struggles. Mothers may also receive medication if needed to treat their condition.
A multidisciplinary program led by Dr. Bobbie Posmontier (College of Nursing and Health Professions) and Dr. Pamela Geller (College of Arts and Sciences) of Drexel University, Mother-Baby Connections is also helping to train a new generation of mental health professionals who are highly skilled in helping mothers feel better. The program also participates in cutting edge research to find the best methods to treat and assess mental health problems that arise during pregnancy and postpartum. Most of all, Mother Baby Connections is committed to giving a voice to women so they do not have to suffer in silence.
