Recent PhD Graduate Helps Unlock an Alternative Energy Source Through an Titanium Oxide Material
July 13, 2023
Hussein O. Badr, who recently graduated from Drexel with a PhD in materials science and engineering, in collaboration with Michel Barsoum, PhD, distinguished professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and scientists from the National Institute of Materials Physics in Bucharest, Romania made a groundbreaking discovery as part of ongoing efforts to develop materials that could enable alternative energy sources. They have produced a titanium oxide nanofilament material that can harness sunlight to unlock the ubiquitous molecule's potential as a fuel source.

During his time at Drexel, Badr presented his research on alternative energy sources using Titanium Oxide Nanostructures at the 2023 Drexel Emerging Graduate Scholars Conference as a research poster presenter and participated in Drexel's Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition. After his team's discovery, Badr worked closely with the Drexel Applied Innovation team through the Office of Research and Innovation to commercialize his team's discovery. While he was working with Drexel Applied Innovation, his team was selected to join the National Science Foundation's Innovation Corps (I-Corps™) in which students and researchers are trained to be entrepreneurs and work for their start-up and promote their discovery. He also participated in a panel for Drexel’s Novous program which is led by Troy Wilford, Drexel’s assistant vice provost for entrepreneurial development to introduce participants to I-Corps methodology.
Congratulations to Barsoum, Badr and team on this incredible discovery!
