Updates to Student Health Insurance

Drexel students and professional staff should have received a communication from Drexel’s Office of Health Insurance & Immunizations alerting them to enroll in or waive the Drexel student health insurance plan by the posted deadlines; August 30 for fall semester programs (including law, medicine, and graduate), and September 30 for fall quarter programs.

All full-time students, including domestic, international, and online students, are required to demonstrate proof of health insurance each academic year, either through a waiver process or by enrolling in the Drexel-sponsored plan.

In addition, students and professional staff may have received communication regarding a change in insurance vendors from Aetna to UnitedHealthcare for the 2023-2024 Academic Year. We are writing to ensure that all who may be impacted receive this exciting and important update and take any necessary action.

What Has Changed?

Drexel Student Health has moved from Aetna to UnitedHealthcare for medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverages effective July 1, 2023. As a result, we are pleased to announce that rates have decreased for the upcoming plan year. UnitedHealthcare will offer the same great coverage as Aetna has in years past with some improvements to some of the coverage. Based on our review, we believe UnitedHealthcare will provide a vast network of providers to choose from, as well as excellent customer service.

Benefits Highlights:

The Medical/Rx plan deductible has decreased from $250 to $100 for individuals utilizing in-network coverage and $350 for out-of-network coverage.

A number of services are covered at a higher coinsurance with UnitedHealthcare, resulting in less out-of-pocket costs for students.

The Deductible and Copays will be waived, and benefits will be paid at 100% for Covered Medical Expenses when treatment is received at the Student Health Center.

The Pharmacy Benefit Manager offers a prescription drug list, where pharmacy copays are structured based on drug tier placement (Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3) and not upon generic, preferred brands, and non-preferred brands. Please visit United Healthcare’s Prescription Drug Formulary to see which tier your prescription(s) fall into.
