The STAR (Students Tackling Advanced Research) Scholars Program is an opportunity for highly motivated first-year students to engage in an early faculty-mentored undergraduate research, scholarship, or creative experience during the summer after their freshman year. This highly competitive program seeks to identify and encourage students to take a hands-on approach to their education through undergraduate research.

In spring 2022, Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design and Curtis Institute of Music presented Rehearsing Philadelphia: A Meta-Score by Ari Benjamin Meyers through a series of events across the city. Rehearsing Philadelphia was initially conceived prior to the start of the pandemic, but the project’s driving questions – centered around justice, virtuosity, access, memory, and togetherness – were shaped and reshaped by COVID’s impact. Taking place across the city, Rehearsing Philadelphia became a poignant analogy for the ways in which people would come back together, as pairings, small groups, and large collectives.

At this year’s Design & Merchandising (D&M) Senior Show, the program will honor alumna Dawn King Vitale (’03) for her outstanding contributions to the retail and merchandising industry.

Before 3D printing, CNC routing, laser cutting and the tools of ubiquitous “making,” there was yarn and needle. For centuries, the earliest makers knitted things into being. Blankets, sweaters, gloves – all took shape by combining just a handful of basic stitches. Now a team of researchers at Drexel University is translating those loops and twists into a digital architecture of knitting — a key step in the process of incorporating new technologies into textiles.

Alisia Lipsey, a fourth-year Drexel University dance major who worked at two different locations for the Young Children’s Center for the Arts during the fall/winter 2020 co-op cycle, spoke with DrexelNow about building relationships with the Center’s young students and older faculty as well as what it was like to complete an in-person co-op at the pandemic’s pre-omicron peak.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, “ARTH 300: The History of Modern Design” students have been cultivating the beauty and meaning from everyday objects. That work is now on display on Drexel’s University City Campus and a half a world away thanks to new collaborators abroad.
