Digital Archaeology October 10, 2009 Digital Media students David Myers and Girish Balakrishnan gave a demonstration of the 3D scanning techniques they used in the summer of 2009 to scan 18th and 19th century ceramic artifacts recovered from an archeological site of the National Constitution Center. Dave and Girish worked with Professor Glen Muschio as part of Drexel's Star Scholars program which was a continuation of Professor Muschio's work on "The 3D Colonial Philadelphia Project -- Digital Restoration of Thin-Shell Objects for Historical Archeological Research and Interpretation,' which has received a grant from the National Science Foundation. Their research involved creating 3D scans of 18th century ceramic shards that once made up household objects including plates, cups and vases. Additionally, Digital Media graduate student Peter Stratton presented a digital 3D model of the ‘President's House,' the first ‘White House' occupied by Presidents George Washington and John Adams. Portions of the House were revealed during the archaeological excavation on Independence Mall at the corner of 6th and Markets Streets last year. Peter presented his model at the 108th Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association held in Philadelphia, December 2009.
