Uncarved Wood Reception

October 1, 2009

Chinese carved wood

Embracing the Uncarved Wood: Sculptural Reliefs from Shandong, China will hold an opening reception on October 1st at 6 PM at the Pearlstein Gallery. Franklin and Marshall College professors Richard Kent, historian of Chinese art, and Virginia Maksymowicz of the sculpture faculty, will give a gallery talk. The exhibition was organized for travel by Franklin and Marshall College. Intricate wood carvings of young Chinese artists who have been deaf since birth or early childhood are the subject of this special show.

Combining traditional Chinese carving methods with very untraditional subject matter, Uncarved Wood features 18 large wood reliefs. A full-color catalog accompanies the exhibition and will be available at the reception. Making one of only two US stops in the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Uncarved Wood runs through October 21st.
