Launching Your Career in the Music Industry

March 02, 2015

All Drexel students—especially those from the Music Industry and Entertainment & Arts Management programs—who are interested in careers in the music industry can receive expert career advice at a panel entitled “Philly Graduates: What’s Next?” on Saturday, March 7 at 2:30pm at the Kimmel Center (300 S. Broad St). Just a few of the industry experts who will be on the panel are Brian McTear, a co-founder of Philadelphia’s renowned studio Miner Street Recordings, Tony Van Veen, CEO and president of AVL Digital Group, the parent company of Disc Makers and CD Baby and James Donio, President of the Music Business Association (Music Biz).

Philly Graduates is a unique platform for successful professionals and entrepreneurs to inspire future leaders in the Philadelphia music industry to be valuable assets to their companies and through their ideas. These industry experts will share how they launched their career paths, advice about what they wished they had known as they started their careers, and why they’ve stayed in Philadelphia. The 2:30pm panel will be followed by a 3:30pm networking hour with refreshments, during which students can speak with key players in the Philadelphia music industry.

The full panel includes Keath Lowry, songwriter/producer and Groove Control Productions founder; Lori Landew, a partner in the Philadelphia office of the national entertainment law firm, Fox Rothschild LLP, and who in 2014 was named Top Entertainment Attorney by Rock On Philly, one of Philadelphia’s top music websites; and Westphal Music Industry Professor Ryan Schwabe, owner of Xcoustic Audio Design and managing partner of the digital record label Rare MP3s LLC. The panel will be moderated by Darren Walters, Westphal Music Industry Professor and co-owner of the independent label, Jade Tree, which is celebrating its 25th year. The event is being organized by MAD Dragon Media Group and the Philadelphia chapter of The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

The panel is geared toward students in Westphal’s Music Industry and Entertainment Management programs, but all are welcome and high school students interested in the music industry are encouraged to attend as well.
