Foundation in Studio Art

Design students
All majors in Design and Media at Westphal College are supported by the Studio Art Program, which provides foundation coursework in 2D design, 3D design and drawing, as well as more advanced studies in painting, printmaking, sculpture and multimedia.
Foundation courses are a major component of the first-year experience for students working in the applied arts. By blending formal traditions in design education with state of the art technologies, students analyze visual information and collaborate with their peers in order to create intuitively and successfully. During the first year of Foundations study, students explore various methods of making; they begin to develop complex studio practices and harness their observational skills to become more visually literate. The main goal of these courses is to foster a student’s creativity, while establishing a solid grasp of design fundamentals. The accumulation of these core skills empower students with confidence in their abilities as they enter into their fields of study.
