About the program

Recorded Music is more than the performer and performance. It is the intersection of business and technology. Behind every artist is a team of professionals recording and mixing sound, marketing and promoting the artist to consumers and media; publishers working to expand the music’s reach through other entertainment outlets, and dozens more individuals crafting virtually every aspect of what will be seen and heard.

Drexel’s Music Industry Summer Program is an intensive one-week, an virtual program for high school students who are serious about acquiring a head start on understanding the basics and the nuances of this incredibly competitive and energetic industry.

Drexel’s faculty of music industry professionals teach the summer program and draw course work from the undergraduate curriculum that addresses music recording, production, marketing, management, publishing and more. Through practical classroom lectures and hands-on experience, students are ensured valuable insight into this one of a kind program.

All students will receive free temporary copies of Logic, Ableton, and Pro Tools for the week of the course.

In order to ensure that best experience with running these programs on your home computers, we ask that your machines meet the following minimum requirements:

Program format

Classes will run online Monday through Friday.

Students will take classes from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a lunch break from 11:45 AM to 1:00 PM (Eastern Time).

9:00 AM–9:45 AM, Studio Recording and Mixing:

By exploring the latest recording equipment and techniques, students will be better prepared to record, mix, and master their own music. Topics will include studio design, microphone selection and placement, and mixing and mastering techniques utilizing industry standard Pro Tools software.

10:00 AM–10:45 AM, Digital Audio Workstations:

By analyzing a current popular song, students will get a hands-on experience trying to recreate its production. In addition, students will be introduced to the use various sound effects, vocal techniques, specialized recording methods pertaining to the art of creating music using a Digital Audio Workstation (ProTools and Logic Pro X).

11:00 AM–11:45 AM, Producing Electronic Music With Ableton Live:

You will spark your curiosity in Electronic Music Production through the lens of Ableton Live. Learning the origins of DAW’s in the making of EMP, your will learn how to create beats, craft compositions, and understand how modern electronic music is made. Students will get the chance to both learn and play with the concepts in an inquisitive friendly space that encourages open dialogue and creativity.

1:00 PM–1:45 PM, The Artist Prospective; Music Business 101:

In the ever-changing music industry landscape, artists and musicians need to be up to date on the current emerging technologies. This course will be covering topics that vary from how record labels are finding new talent through strategies such as data analyzation, algorithms, and play-listing, to how you can find your voice in digital marketing and branding, and the importance of live performance and touring from both a DIY and major label approach. The course will cover the essential information for all artists on record labels, publishing and copyright, marketing and promotion, and the concert and touring industry.

1:00 PM–1:45 PM, The Label Prospective; Music Business 101:

In the rapidly changing music industry landscape, labels need to be up to date on the current emerging technologies and best practices. This course will explore the state of the art of the current industry from the label perspective including distribution models, marketing, promotion, PR, social media, as well as discovering and working with artists. This will be explored from both a DIY and major label approach as well as for set it’s looking to start their own label or self-release.

From 2:00 PM–3:20 PM each day there will be a choice of open sessions available for students:

  • Open Lab Time: Our computer labs will be open for students to work on their music and instructors will be there for trouble shooting and advice.
  • Pass the Aux: Students will be able to bring in their current recordings and have them critiqued for recording, production, and mix quality by their peers and a faculty member.
  • Visiting Artist/Music Industry Professional Series: Each day a different professional from the music industry will host an open format speaking engagement where students will get a 360 degree behind the scenes look at every angle of the industry.

Orientation:

You will have an orientation on Sunday, July 12 for both you and your parents to meet faculty and familiarize yourselves with class locations. Students will be expected to report directly to their first class on Monday morning.

Closing Reception:

The program is capped by a reception the evening of the last day of the program. Students who complete the one-week program will receive a program certificate.

We welcome mature high school students, at least 16 years old, who have completed their sophomore year by July.

Apply by submitting the following items:

  • Your high school transcript; official or unofficial transcript. Transcripts can be e-mailed to bll42@drexel.edu.
  • A 300-word personal statement discussing your interest in music and the summer program.

A $300 deposit must be included with your application. Acceptable form of payment is Credit Card (use with online application only).

All applications will be reviewed upon completion and applicants will be notified within in three weeks of receiving a completed application. Students who are not accepted into the program will receive a full refund of their $300 application deposit.

Upon acceptance, we will mail an information package to you and your family with additional program information and, of course, more forms to complete. The $300 deposit will be credited towards the full tuition cost. Upon acceptance, your deposit is non-refundable. The balance of $500 must be paid by June 22, 2020.

How soon will you hear from us? All applications will be reviewed as we receive them and applicants will be notified within 3 weeks from receipt. Admissions decisions are based upon academic preparation and a commitment to learn. We will limit the program to approximately 50 students. We will e-mail or mail an acceptance letter and an information package to you and your family with additional program information, and of course, more forms to complete. Enrollment is limited and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis upon review and acceptance of the application.

The tuition of $800 includes:

  • Classes and lectures with Drexel faculty and networking with professionals in the music industry.

Faculty

Ryan Moys (Instructor for Studio Recording)

After graduating from the Art Institute of Seattle and spending several years working as a freelance engineer at recording studios and clubs in the Seattle area, Ryan eventually made his way back to Philadelphia and continued his career in the local music scene as the personal engineer for Grammy Award winning record producer James Poyser (Jimmy Fallon Show, Erykah Badu, Common, The Roots, D’Angelo). Over the years, he has earned an impressive credit list working with renowned artists such as Common, Joss Stone, Anthony Hamilton, Jazmine Sullivan, Andra Day, and Jill Scott. Working at The Studio, the famed Philadelphia recording facility owned by award-winning arranger and composer Larry Gold, he recorded and mixed notable major label and independent client projects, as well as recorded string arrangements for artists such as Kanye West. He has engineered on several Grammy Award winning albums including Kirk Franklin’s 2009 Best Contemporary RnB Gospel Album “Fight of My Life” and Tye Tribbett’s 2013 Best Gospel Album “Greater Than”. Ryan has also recorded and mixed scores for feature films such as VH1’s “Totally Awesome”, as well as mixing concert TV series for VH1, MTV, and TVOne.

Ryan currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Producers & Engineer’s Wing of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Recording Academy.

Ben Runyan (Instructor for Producing Electronic Music)

Philadelphia's Ben Runyan is the face of J U S T P R O C E S S. Previously Runyan lead the Philadelphia electronic pop group City Rain. As a band City Rain has experienced acclaim for the cinematic music video for their first single, "The Optimist," which in 2013 landed on VEVO's Indie Playlist garnering over 250,000 hits. The track steamrolled through 2014 when the video won mtvU's The Freshmen contest in February, placing it in regular rotation on the network. More recently, City Rain teamed up with MTV again when the song was fittingly featured on MTV's popular reality TV show, Catfish. City Rain’s music has also been featured on Esquire TV, Showtime, and G4TV. City Rain was also nominated for ASCAP’s Sammy Cahn award for best lyrics for “The Optimist” in 2013. City Rain, with Ben at the helm, as performed/DJ’ed with artists like Washed Out, School of Seven Bells, Capital Cities, Class Actress, Robert Delong, Alvin Risk and more.

In the composition world City Rain scores music for commercials and short film. Drawing on various influences, City Rain devises lush ambient textures complimented by melodic piano structures.

Runyan is currently an Adjunct Professor of Music Technology at both Drexel and Rowan Universities.

Cyrille Taillandier (Instructor for Producing with Digital Audio Workstations)

After graduating in 1996 from the Ecole Superieure de Realisation Audiovisuelle (Paris, France), Cyrille Taillandier started his professional career as an assistant recording engineer. From 1996 to 1999 he worked at a number of prominent French studios including Davout, Soft-ADS, Miraval, and Le Manoir. As a second engineer for the recording of the multi-platinum and award-winning Essence Ordinaire by the renowned French band Zebda, Cyrille worked side by side with the albums producer Nicholas Sansano and traveled to New York for the completion of the record. He fell in love with the city and moved to Brooklyn in 1999. For the next two years Cyrille worked as a Pro Tools engineer and mix assistant with Tony Maserati on multi-platinum albums including Alicia Keys Songs in A Minor, P. Diddy’s Forever, R. Kelly’s TP-2.com, and Jennifer Lopez’s On the 6. Cyrille has been an independent audio and Pro Tools engineer since 2001.His recent projects include, Angelique Kidjo’s Black Ivory Soul, Lenny Kravitz’s Black and White America as well as mixing the latest Lenny Kravitz “Low” Jaxx De Luxe remix. Cyrille oversees the MAD Dragon Community Recording program at Drexel, empowering local artists with the tools and knowledge required for self-expression through recorded media.

Jeff Apruzzese (Instructor for The Artist Prospective; Music Business 101 / Program Director)

Jeff Apruzzese has over a decade of experience in the music industry and is a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Upon receiving his diploma, he became the bassist of Passion Pit (signed to Columbia Records) and was a member of the band for 8 years. During his time in Passion Pit, he toured the world extensively, performed at some of the largest festivals (Lollapalooza, Coachella, Summer Sonic, Austin City Limits, Glastonbury, Made in America), and played on some of the highest profile late night shows (Saturday Night Live, David Letterman, Kimmy Kimmel).

Jeff also has experience in PR and marketing and spent time working in New York City at the boutique agency Girlie Action Media with such clients as Surfer Blood, Kate Pearson (B-52’s), Holy Ghost!, Mitski, Hop Along, Palehound, and many more.

Jeff returned to Berklee College of Music in 2015 to help establish the Berklee Popular Music Institute (BPMI), which provides students with experiential learning in live music and performance. Under his guidance, BPMI booked major festivals including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Osheaga, Essence, Governors Ball, Chicago Open Air, and Music Midtown.

Career highlights for Jeff include selling out the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York on February 12, 2013 during a blizzard and having the Passion Pit record Gossamer debut at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Joe Steinhardt (Instructor for The Label Prospective; Music Business 101)

Joe Steinhardt is the owner of Don Giovanni Records, a label that he co-founded in 2003 with Zach Gajewski. Initially, their intent was to document the independent music scene then emerging from New Brunswick, New Jersey. However, the label’s focus has since broadened to include a geographically diverse community of artists, including Screaming Females, Moor Mother, Mal Blum, Native American Music Award “Best Artist” winner Keith Secola, and Holy Modal Rounders founder, Peter Stampfel. It has also released formative works by nationally recognized groups like Waxahatchee, Priests, and Downtown Boys, as well as the comedian Chris Gethard.

Don Giovanni Records remains committed to furthering alternative culture and independent values, providing resources for artists who prefer to work outside of the mainstream music industry.

In 2016, Steinhardt founded and curated the New Alternative Music Festival, a two day concert held at New Jersey’s Asbury Park Convention Hall. NAMF was an intentional event, gathering a bill composed entirely of musicians acting without ties to major labels or corporate distribution.

Steinhardt studied at Boston University and earned a Ph.D. in communication at Cornell. He currently resides in Philadelphia, where he is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Drexel University’s Music Industry Program.

Our degree program

Drexel’s four-year Music Industry major combines both the business and technology aspect of the music field with continued study in the art of music. Students complete a well-rounded program beginning with courses in music theory, ear training, music history, orchestration and arranging, piano, songwriting, and world music. They continue with professional coursework in music business, recording industry operations, marketing management, recording, sound production, acoustics, and computer applications for music, complemented by continued liberal arts studies. The program features two three-month co-op experiences that allow students to work in the field and the opportunity to work for Drexel’s student-run record label, MAD Dragon Records; artist services company, Bantic Media, booking agency, Drako Concert Promotions; and publishing company, MAD Dragon Publishing.
