Emergent Making: Material Expression, Character, Performance

Joshua Longo

Joshua Longo is a designer, artist, and teacher whose work focuses on using the traditional and contemporary understanding of animism as a philosophical foundation for a new design process, specifically focused on artifact creation, experiential learning, and performance based expression. This includes emergent making which can be defined as, ideas arent imposed on material, but born of mutal exchange between human & nonhuman alike. Improvisation and curiosity guide the hand while the material inform the outcome. This process is a cyclical three part journey starting in the studio with material experimentation and conversation, testing theories in the classroom, and then applying findings through artifact creation to the design industry and/or a gallery setting.
