Business Enterprises at Westphal
Business Enterprise is a critical part of the learning
experience at the Westphal College. In many of our departments and programs,
students participate in businesses as part of their education on and off campus. Our in-house enterprises offer students the opportunity to learn how to operate a business enterprise using a hands-on method, while promoting the work and products of Drexel University faculty, students, alumni, staff and the surrounding community. Media students can get involved as producers, directors, camera operators, gaffers and in other production roles. Below are some examples of the business enterprises houses within our college:
The Design & Merchandising Program strives to be innovative and collaborative, while preparing students for the challenges of global business and design worlds. The d&mShop, created as the Design & Merchandising Program’s retail learning laboratory, facilitates hands-on learning in all aspects of the retail arena, affording students the opportunity to create and sell product, develop marketing and signage and execute merchandising strategies through an entrepreneurial experience. Students work in a “real” environment to execute retail solutions through an operational business.
Translating industry experiences and expertise into the classroom has always been a priority for the Design & Merchandising program. The learning laboratory role of the d&mShop has always been incorporated into curriculum, and the original objective still holds true today: To offer students the opportunity to learn how to operate a business enterprise using a hands-on method while promoting the work of Westphal College faculty, students, staff and alumni. Through the online component of the store, students will learn to start, build and grow an online business to profitability. A functioning online store gives students a unique experience that builds their skill sets for co-op and beyond graduation.
