Janey is an interior designer and educator whose work brings together professional practice and an interest in the cultural and material dimensions of interior environments. With more than 23 years of experience in the design profession, her work encompasses hospitality, retail, multi-family, corporate and residential projects. Her approach to design is grounded in an understanding of how environments shape the experiences of the people who use them and how thoughtful design can create meaningful connections between people and place.
Janey’s professional practice is based in Philadelphia, where she has worked with several leading design firms contributing roles as Design Director and Lead Interior Designer. A key part of her practice is translating design intent from drawings and specifications into the built environment, working collaboratively with contractors, consultants, vendors, and trades to resolve challenges in the field while maintaining the integrity of the design. She now operates Janey Garrido Interior Design LLC, providing residential interior design and consulting services.
As an educator, Janey is interested in creating learning environments that empower students to explore, question, and take creative risks while developing the technical and professional skills necessary to enter the design profession. She incorporates real-world project experiences and professional practice into her teaching, helping students understand how conceptual ideas translate into realized spaces. Her teaching emphasizes critical thinking, communication, collaboration, curiosity, empathy, and a sense of responsibility toward the people and environments designers serve.
Janey’s design interests extend to textile design, particularly the ways pattern, material, and craft can communicate cultural identity and create connections between people and place. She is interested in how cultural context, vernacular traditions, and material practices can inform contemporary interior environments and contribute to a deeper sense of belonging and place.
