Working from Home Best Practices

If you have any questions or want to discuss working from home best practices further, please contact your Steinbright advisor.

Establish a Regular Communication Plan

Communication is essential for workplace success, especially when working remotely. When you begin co-op, establish a regular communication plan with your supervisor. Determine how best to ask questions (e.g., email, communication platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams, phone, virtual meeting). Ideally, try to schedule weekly check-in meetings. Share regular status updates with your supervisor so they are aware of your progress – when working remotely, it's better to over-communicate than under-communicate.

Stick to a schedule

Create a schedule to feel more productive throughout your workday – and stick to it! Consider establishing a pre-work routine that makes you feel motivated. Try to minimize distractions throughout the workday and build in short, scheduled breaks away from your computer to help you refocus. Create a task list to stay on track and review your daily and weekly progress.

Participate in Meetings

Demonstrate that you are enthusiastic and engaged by speaking up during group meetings, as appropriate. Even if it's not required, it may be worthwhile to turn on your camera during virtual meetings, to show you're actively listening and participating.

Create a Dedicated Workspace

Create a dedicated workspace at home where you feel comfortable and motivated. Ideally, find a space that is separate from non-work activities, so you can create clear boundaries between workspace and personal space. Try as best as possible to keep your workspace clean and organized.

Get to Know Your Colleagues

Building a relationship with your colleagues can enhance your overall co-op experience. While working remotely, you may need to make an extra effort to get to know your colleagues better. At the start of your co-op, try to schedule one-on-one meetings with your new colleagues, if possible. Remote communication platforms, like Slack or Microsoft Teams, could provide an opportunity to connect more casually and learn about colleagues' interests or hobbies. If your colleagues live in the area, consider asking to meet for a coffee or lunch sometime.
