Navigating the Workplace

Every workplace functions a bit differently, each with their own office culture and policies.

Communicating effectively with your supervisor and asking questions can help you navigate your co-op workplace. If you experience a challenge during co-op, set up a time to meet with your co-op supervisor or Steinbright advisor.

Communicate with your Supervisor

It's important to establish a good working relationship with your co-op supervisor. At the start of your co-op, ask some questions to help you determine your supervisor's communication style and preferences (i.e., email, in-person meeting). Keep your supervisor regularly updated on your progress. When offered feedback from your supervisor, actively listen and try your best to incorporate their feedback.

Ask Questions

Often the best way to navigate the workplace is by asking questions. If you are unclear on a particular policy or task, it's best to ask for clarification. When possible, try to do some research or refer to your employer's policy handbook to see if you can find an answer – if not, it's better to ask than assume. Check with your supervisor and colleagues about their preferred way for reviewing and answering questions (i.e., via email, weekly meeting).

Challenging Conversations

If you encounter an issue or challenge at your co-op workplace, you may need to have a difficult conversation with your co-op supervisor to address the issue. For many people, addressing an issue is scary, because the conversation can potentially lead to conflict. However, if you don't express how you're feeling or what you need, your situation may be unlikely to change. To prepare for a more productive conversation, plan out what you want to say in advance. Identify the specific issue that needs to be addressed and how your supervisor can help you be more successful. Avoid language that places blame on your supervisor, as you want to decrease the chances of putting them on the defensive. Be open to listening to your supervisor's perspective on the situation, so that you can move towards a mutual understanding. Try to end the conversation on a positive note and work towards an action plan.

If you are encountering a challenge on co-op you can always contact your Steinbright advisor for support.
