Letters of Recommendation

Some employment opportunities or academic programs require a letter (or letters) of recommendation.

When requesting a letter of recommendation, reach out to your selected individual(s) well in advance — ideally at least two to three weeks before it’s needed — and ask politely if they would feel comfortable writing a strong recommendation for you. In your message, briefly explain what you’re applying for, why you’re asking them specifically, and what skills or experiences you hope they can highlight. Provide any helpful materials, such as your résumé, the job or academic program description, relevant accomplishments, and the deadline. Close by thanking them for their time and offering to supply any additional information they may need.

Be sure to include the email or mailing address, so the letter of recommendation can be sent directly from the individual writing it to the person or organization requesting the recommendation.
