CITI Research Security Training Module Now Available

Dear Colleagues,

As previously communicated, federal agencies now require senior/key personnel to complete research security training on an annual basis. The National Science Foundation (NSF) began enforcing this requirement for proposals submitted on or after October 10, 2025. Other federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), are following suit with similar requirements. Completion of this training is mandatory for proposal submission, research performance progress, and reports. There is both an institutional and individual requirement to maintain proof of training completion.

In alignment with the CHIPS and Science Act, NSPM-33, and implementing guidance from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other federal agencies, Drexel University has adopted a standardized one-hour condensed Research Security training module delivered through CITI.

Completion of this CITI module satisfies federal research security training requirements, including those related to disclosure obligations, conflicts of commitment, international collaboration, and protection of the U.S. research enterprise from undue foreign influence.

Accessing the training:

  • Log in to CITI using your credentials
  • From the CITI Main Menu, select “Add a Course”
  • Choose the Condensed Research Security (1-hour) module

Training completion is automatically recorded in CITI for institutional compliance purposes.

If you have previously completed Drexel-approved research security training, you do not need to retake training immediately. However, because federal guidance requires annual research security training, you will be required to complete the CITI module once your current training reaches its one-year renewal date.

Please note that for certain controlled, sensitive, or higher-risk research activities, additional CITI modules (such as Undue Foreign Influence or Export Controls) may be required based on sponsor requirements and the nature of the research.

If you have questions regarding applicability or access, please contact Export@drexel.edu.

Thank you for your continued commitment to responsible and secure research practices.

Sincerely,
