Starting a New Academic Year By Barbara Hornum, PhD, DCAE Director and Dana D’Angelo, DCAE Associate Director
Drexel Center for Academic Excellence
The DCAE now has new space in Korman, Room 295. A new conference room was created so that small groups of the Drexel community can meet and discuss topics surrounding teaching and learning. If you would like to reserve the room, please contact the DCAE Director, Dr. Barbara Hornum, to set up details. Please send a “reservation” to firstname.lastname@example.org so we can avoid double booking. The room is available unless previously booked for one hour blocks on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 2:00-4:00 p.m. during the second week of each month. The space also has a number of books that may be of interest to you.
The Annual New Faculty Orientation took place on September 9 with many attendees from across the university. New faculty from the College of Nursing and Health Professions were a major presence and there were new faculty who ranged from those who were new to Academia to those who were experienced at other institutions but new to Drexel. This year we also had some general sessions in the morning and concurrent sessions in the afternoon covering different aspects of faculty responsibilities, scholarship research, entrepreneurship, teaching & learning and service. We also welcomed some new department chairs and our new Provost.
Save-the-Date! The DCAE fall workshop – managing Sensitive Topics in the Classroom – will take place on Monday, November 16, at 2:00 p.m. Further details will be provided in an upcoming communication and on the DCAE website.
This past September, Drexel Adjunct Faculty came together on campus for an academic year “Kick-Off” event. The agenda included a short orientation discussion for new adjuncts; a networking reception; an address by John DiNardo, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs; an overview of resources for adjuncts and the various adjunct initiatives by Vice Provost Janet Fleetwood and Associate Director Dana D’Angelo of the office of Faculty Development and Equity, respectively; and a launch of the new use of the Magna Series (see below for more information) and discussion on flipped classrooms. For the first time, this event was also live streamed, and several adjuncts joined and participated virtually. Adjunct faculty continue to receive monthly email communications from the DCAE through the online BbLearn Community with updates on teaching and learning events, and general information for classroom support.
To continue to meet the needs of all faculty and administrators, the DCAE has purchased a one-year institutional subscription to Magna Mentor Commons, which is a continuously growing collection of 20-minute professional development videos focused on different learning and development topics, including: Blended Learning, Classroom Management, Course Design, Grading and Feedback, Flipped Courses, Online Course Management, Student Engagement and many more. The videos will support an on-demand approach to faculty development and allow participants to select topics or ideas most relevant for their own professional development. Supplemental PowerPoint slides, review questions and other materials are also available. Visit the DCAE website for step-by-step instructions on setting up a free account under the institutional subscription.
