      The Academic Calendar has been adjusted so that the Fall Quarter 2023 will now start on Tuesday, September 26. Several other academic calendar dates have also been adjusted, including the deadlines to resolve financial holds, add/drop and withdraw from courses. The move will allow her to focus her efforts into directing the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative, leading the Drexel Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) program and advancing the University's agenda in the areas of health equity, urban studies and environmental sustainability, both in the U.S. and globally, as a Distinguished University Professor of Epidemiology.

      As announced in Monday's message from the Return Oversight Committee, Drexel will become mask recommended in our academic spaces, and in all indoor public areas except for health care settings, effective September 6. Drexel continues to recommend wearing high quality, well-fitting masks when indoors and around others. However, consistent with public health guidance in the context of a heavily vaccinated campus, indoor masking is no longer required after September 6.

      After the sudden passing of Dean Penny Hammrich left the School of Education in need of an interim leader, Erin McNamara Horvat, PhD, senior vice provost for Faculty Advancement and Undergraduate Affairs, will serve as interim dean of the School, beginning August 22. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Horvat joined Drexel University in 2015 as professor and associate dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Education and in 2016 joined the Office of the Provost. She served as senior vice provost for Faculty Affairs from 2016-2019 overseeing policy and procedures and faculty development for all colleges and schools.

      Thanks to the advocacy of the Undergraduate Student Government Association, the University will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2 in an effort to encourage voter turnout and in support of the USGA’s expanded efforts to make this a day of service. Although classes will not be cancelled, faculty are encouraged to be flexible when possible.

    • Possible SEPTA Strike Emergency Transportation Plans

      There is a possibility of a strike by SEPTA City Transit Division as early as 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 31. In the event of a strike, Drexel University would remain open as we have with past strikes. We are partnering with other major University City institutions to provide shuttle service linking riders from the 69th Street Transit Center and the PATCO terminus at 15th and Locust streets to our campuses. The Pass/No Pass option provided flexibility as students and faculty were adjusting to learning and teaching remotely.       In her nearly two years as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Norma Bouchard, PhD, has worked to strengthen and balance the College budget, streamlined the College’s structure and processes, and served on key University committees, including Drexel’s Anti-Racism Task Force and as co-chair of the Fall 2020 Covid-19 Task Force. Now, she is leaving Drexel to take over as provost of Chapman University, where she will oversee the entire academic program at the 9,600-student private university in Southern California.

      It is simply my pleasure to introduce the 2016 Cohort of Provost's Fellows. We received 22 applications for 4 slots. The selection committee was impressed by all of the applications and overwhelmed by the response. After long deliberation, we extended the number of Provost's Fellows for this cohort to 7 new fellows. To respond to the demand, we created a few part-time slots for new Provost's Fellows to work on smaller projects.
