A Healthier U is a health and wellness program at Drexel that targets a holistic, healthy approach to life, encompassing not just the physical but also the mental and financial wellness of Drexel students and employees.
Whether it includes a physical competition like a triathlon or simply having a venue to try a new, healthy food option, A Healthier U hosted or acted as a partner in events throughout the year to promote overall health in the Drexel community.
Here’s a spotlight on some of the events Drexel held in 2014–15, many of which will recur again during the next academic year.
Oct. 15, 2015: Dan Gottlieb
Award-winning author and NPR Host Dan Gottlieb, PhD, of the popular WHYY “Voices in the Family” psychology call-in show visited campus to lead an emotional wellness talk on death and dying.
Oct 29, 2014: Drexel Food Day
Drexel’s fifth annual Food Day event featured a wide array of healthy food samples from popular Drexel Campus Dining locations.
Jan. 28, 2015: Tai Chi for Health
Tai Chi for Health instructor Ralph Quinn led faculty and professional staff in a Tai Chi practice to improve flexibility and to manage stress. This event was the second annual in a yearly collaboration with the Drexel Meditation Group.
March 28, 2015: Triathlon/Duathlon
Held indoors at the Drexel Recreation Center, the third annual triathlon options consisted of swimming in the pool, cycling on stationary bikes, and a run/walk on treadmills while the Duathlon offered racers the option of replacing the swim with an additional running/walking leg.
April 8, 2015: Health and Wellness Fair
The sixth annual Health and Wellness Fair was themed “Focus on Food and Fitness.” It featured biometric health screenings, free healthy food samples and vendors from Drexel and beyond.
April 25, 2015: Sport and Exercise Science Clinic
This annual event, held in partnership with the Drexel Recreation Center, featured an assemblage of nationally renowned and accomplished professionals hailing from the strength and conditioning and fitness field, appealing to both beginners and professionals.
April 28, 2015: Harvest Walk to Dine
In celebration of Earth Day, members of the Drexel Walking Club met to walk one mile to Harvest Seasonal Restaurant, where they enjoyed a talk on sustainability and enjoyed healthy local food. The University City Drexel Walking Club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays year-round, rain or shine, for a 30-minute stroll.
May 19, 2015: Sports Nutrition Conference
A Healthier U and the Center for Integrated Nutrition and Performance offered an annual conference for registered dieticians, students and anyone interested in nutrition and athletic performance.
