Master of Legal Studies Student Authors Chapter in Health Law and Compliance Book

MLS student Charles Brantley, '19

January 14, 2019

Charles Brantley, a student in the Master of Legal Studies program, wrote a chapter in the 2019 edition of “Health Law and Compliance Update,” published by Wolters Kluwer.

Brantley wrote “The Affordable Care Act: Health Care Quality Initiatives in the Balance,” a 20-page overview of the behemoth health reform law signed into law by President Obama, which appears immediately after the introduction to the book.

Currently the manager of clinical services at Cotiviti, a health care information technology company, Brantley will complete his MLS with a concentration in Health Care Compliance in May.

An experienced medical coding and billing professional, Brantley credited Professor Paul Flanagan, director of the Privacy, Cybersecurity and Compliance program, with encouraging him to submit content for the book.

“Professor Flanagan was extra supportive of me in offering me not only the education in his class, but the opportunity to be involved in this book,” Brantley said. “I’m appreciative of his teaching skill and his involvement with the students.”

Based in Research Triangle, North Carolina, Brantley is completing his degree online and has yet to meet Flanagan in person.

Brantley said the program has expanded his understanding of critical legal requirements that Cotiviti’s clients face and will help broaden his own professional opportunities.
