3L Michael Benz Invited to ‘Top Gun National Mock Trial Competition’

April 12, 2012

Michael Benz, a 3L, is among just 18 law students in the U.S. who will take part in this year’s Top Gun National Mock Trial Competition at Baylor Law School.

He will bring classmate Margaret Wheltle with him to serve as his coach for the by-invitation competition.

The competition in June will mark Benz and Wheltle’s second trip to Texas since March. The pair were semi-finalists in this year’s Texas Young Lawyers Association National Trial Team Competition, reaching the final four after defeating Yale Law School.

Benz and Wheltle have won at the regional level for two consecutive years.

“I’m delighted but not terribly surprised by the invitation,” said Professor Gwen Roseman Stern, who directs the Trial Advocacy Program here. “Mike is one of the most effective student advocates I’ve ever seen in competition. He’s extraordinarily quick on his feet. And he’s lucky to have Maggie helping him, because she very definitely knows how to bring out the best in him.”
