Celebrating 10 Years of the Drexel University Black Alumni Council
November 1, 2024
The Drexel University Black Alumni Council (DUBAC) held its 10-Year Anniversary Gala, on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at The Warwick Hotel in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square.
At this black-tie affair, the prominent alumni group not only celebrated 10 years of activity, but also announced the launch of a follow-up to “A Legacy to Share,” the group’s groundbreaking publication featuring alumni stories of persistence and achievement. “A Legacy to Share, Volume 2: Navigating Life’s Challenges and Celebrating Our Greatest Achievements” provides more accounts of resilience from Drexel alumni and their subsequent professional success.
Goodwin College Executive Director Brian Ellis, PhD, presented the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award to Lenny Comma ’92, former chairman and CEO of Jack in the Box Inc. Lenny has served as an executive for a number of enterprises and served on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and his main connection to his alma mater has been as an impactful supporter of the LeBow College of Business’ Build Relationships in Diverse Group Experiences (BRIDGE) program.
Another alumnus, Jemel McWilliams ’03, a sought-after choreographer and director who’s worked with Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, John Legend and others, received DUBAC’s 2024 Paragon Trailblazer Award.
The evening was facilitated by DUBAC President and Drexel Trustee, Jerry Martin ’77 and mistress of ceremonies Niki Hawkins, vice president of community engagement at Philadelphia’s WPVI-TV (6-ABC). The sold-out affair was attended by many prominent Drexel alumni, including Drexel 100 member and Goodwin alum Joel Ruffin ’05, who was also one of the event’s top sponsors.
