Tanisha Barnes, Goodwin Class of 2024

May 1, 2024

Tanisha Barnes is a double Goodwin Dragon, having completed her bachelor's degree in general studies in 2021 as a non-traditional student and then pursuing a master's degree in nonprofit management. As she is a member of the Goodwin Class of 2024 and a student who has pursued higher education despite risks and obstacles, we wanted to share her perspectives on the path she has taken and on her achievements with the entire Goodwin community in advance of next month's Commencement ceremonies. Congratulations to Tanisha and the Class of 2024!

As a proud member of the 2024 graduating class, I wanted to share the story of a 49-year-old Black woman who took the risk of going back to school to obtain her graduate degree. Upon reflecting on graduation, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the chance provided by Goodwin College and Drexel University.

My path has been one of tenacity, fortitude and steadfast faith. I experienced difficulties along the road, like many of my fellow graduates, juggling employment, family and academics. There were times when I felt overwhelmed by the weight of my obligations, and I experienced periods of doubt. But despite everything, I persisted, I had a strong desire and the passion to create a chance.

I have had to negotiate a world that isn't always friendly to or inclusive of Black women. However, I chose to focus on the triumphant moments. I stand here now as a tribute to the human spirit's resilience and the strength of tenacity.

My path is about all of us, not just myself. It has to do with how education can change people's lives and create opportunities. It is about disrupting the status quo and dismantling barriers. It is about appreciating our differences and celebrating diversity.

Let us take with us the knowledge we have gained, the connections we have formed and the goals we have dared to seek. Let us not forget that this is only the beginning of our adventure. And let us keep pushing to be the best versions of ourselves we can be, continue to learn new things and change the world.

To all my fellow graduates, congratulations. I hope you have a bright future, a full heart, and endless dreams.

Thank you.
