The Critical Language Fellowship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers fully-funded summer intensive Chinese language and cultural immersion institutes for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students. The CLS Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It is part of a U.S. government interagency effort to dramatically expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages, such as Chinese.

Boren Awards for International Study

Boren Awards, funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), provide unique funding opportunities for US undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to US interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholarships can provide undergraduates with up to $20,000 and graduate students with up to $30,000, depending on the length of time overseas and the cost of the program.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides scholarships to U.S. undergraduates with financial need for study abroad, including students from diverse backgrounds and students going to non-traditional study abroad destinations. Established under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, Gilman Scholarships provide up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit. Students studying critical need languages (including Chinese) are eligible for up to $3,000 in additional funding as part of the Gilman Critical Need Language Supplement program.

Fulbright-Hays Program

The Fulbright-Hays Program awards grants to individual K-14 pre-teachers, teachers and administrators, pre-doctoral students and postdoctoral faculty, as well as to U.S. institutions and organizations.  Funding supports research and training efforts overseas, which focus on non-Western foreign languages and area studies.

Fulbright Student Program

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research and/or teach English abroad.
