Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University), had the first School of Illustration in the United States, taught by the father of illustration, Howard Pyle. The courses at Drexel taught many of the illustration greats, including Violet Oakley and Frank Schoonover, who are represented in the Drexel Founding Collection’s drawings collection. Additional artists include Thornton Oakley and John Laird, as well as a number of Italian drawings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
