Holding Your Drink: 3,000 Years of Drinking Vessels from the Drexel and Salzberg Collections
Friday, March 16, 2018
8:00 AM-7:00 PM
Exhibition from December 8, 2017 through March 16, 2018. Drinking is a necessary human activity, whether for survival, pleasure, socializing, or rituals. But have you thought about what we drink from?
How and why we drink is different around the world. This exhibition, curated by the Drexel Westphal students and directed by Distinguished Teaching Professor Derek Gillman and Director of the Drexel Collection, Lynn Clouser, displayed a well-selected collection of drinkwares from both The Drexel Collection and Dr. Salzberg’s collection of Chinese porcelain. It has a broad time and geographical span, from ca. 12 century BCE China to 20th century Europe.
You will become more knowledgeable by learning the multiple functions, materials, and ritual meanings of the drinking vessels. The vessels we use to drink are more valuable to us than you may realize. Their importance lies not just in the liquids they hold, but in the meanings we give them.
A significant part of the exhibition was brought to Drexel University through the generosity of Dr. Brian M. Salzberg, Professor of Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine.
