Why America Needs to Hear About Lesotho
In a Mar. 13 article in The Progressive Magazine, Patrick Smith, BSN RN, PhD student in the department of Community Health and Prevention at the Dornsife School of Public Health, discusses the current administration's recent cuts to USAID funding which endangers the lives of millions and jeopardizes decades worth of health care progress.
"Lesotho has the world’s second-highest prevalence of HIV, second-highest tuberculosis incidence, and ninth-highest maternal mortality ratio. Its health care workers save lives. Through sun and snow, they deliver babies, administer vaccines, and treat conditions from heart failure to tuberculosis. In just fifteen years, their efforts have helped Lesotho achieve massive decreases in HIV incidence and a ten-year increase in life expectancy," shared Smith.
