Thursday, January 9th for the first Physics Colloquium of the Winter Term! Guest lecturer,
Dr. Jared Maxson, will be visiting from Cornell University and will present his talk "
Particle Accelerators for Science and Society".
Abstract:
Originally exclusively the tool of nuclear and high energy physics, particle accelerators are now vital for many physical and biological sciences. They also play critical roles in society: for example, particle accelerators underpin several types of cancer therapy, clean wastewater, or crosslink polymers. These devices range from tabletop size to many kilometers in length, but nonetheless have many common features and components.
Particle accelerator physics is a discipline that focuses on the development of new accelerators from both a fundamental and applied point of view. This talk will be an unabashed advertisement of this discipline. I will describe a few major upcoming particle accelerator projects and technologies in the US and abroad, including both scientific and industrial use. I’ll also point out that the major challenges in particle accelerator physics map closely onto other areas of physics, ranging from plasma physics, electron microscopy, nonlinear dynamics and chaos, and condensed matter physics.
