Chemistry Department Seminar

Friday and Saturday, November 15 & 16, 2019

2:00 PM-3:00 PM

Giovanni Wilson Amarante (Current at Temple), Associate Professor – Chemistry Department – Federal University of Juiz de Fora – Brazil

"Recent Findings for Construction of C-C and C-X (N, O and S) Bonds: Heterocycle Synthetic Challenges and Methylsulfenylation of Activated Carbons. "

Since 2011 Prof. Amarante’s research group (GPMS) has dedicated its efforts in the development of methodologies, aiming the construction of new C-C and C-X (N, O and S) bonds as well as the fast improvement of organic molecules complexity (Figure 1). In this context, our recent contributions concerning the use of azlactone or isoxazolone rings to form new C-C and C-O bonds, with great enhancement of the molecular complexity in a single reaction step will be exposed. Furthermore, our recent findings on methylsulfenylation of electrophilic carbons using DMSO, with the development of a new sulfur reagent for this transformation will be discussed. Moreover, for each system, mechanistic investigations, synthetic and biological applications will also be detailed.
