IIT Kanpur-Drexel International Collaborative Graduate Programs

Dual Degree Programs: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and Master of Science (MS) (Biomedical Engineering–Drexel, & Bioengineering–IITK) Program
Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (MS in BME)
Master of Science in Biomedical Science (MS in BMS

Between Drexel University (United States) and Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK)(India)

These are Drexel University’s International Collaborative Dual Doctoral Degree (PhD) Program, and Master of Science Programs with Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, which is formerly known as IITK. During Master’s two-year program, the students will study the Drexel approved curriculum at IITK campus in Kanpur, India in the first year. In the second year, students land at Drexel University campus for the completion of remaining studies. The successful students would be awarded a Drexel MS degree in Biomedical Engineering or MS in Biomedical Science.

Similarly, for dual PhD (four years) Program, the students will complete required course work at host institute and continue doing research for two years, thereafter, will switch over to partnering institute to complete remaining research in next two years. The mentors and research projects, at both sides would be pre-identified and approved following respective university policies. The student’s requirement, and course credits at either institute would be transferrable, following respective institutional norms. Thus, the students would be getting the opportunities to work at two different universities, two mentors/co-mentors, and upon successful completion, will talk out with two PhD degrees in hand (BME / BMS of Drexel, and BioEngr / BioSci of IITK) (as applicable).

Founded in 1959 as part of Kanpur Indo-American Program (KIAP), spread over 1055 acres with 108 buildings, headquartered in metropolitan city of Kanpur (India), During the first ten years of its existence, a consortium of nine US universities (namely MIT, UCB, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Carnegie Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Case Institute of Technology and Purdue University) helped set up IIT Kanpur's research laboratories and academic programs under KIAP. IITK is conveniently located in proximity of Lucknow (~65 km) and New Delhi (~400 km) International Airports. IITK’s Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering (BSBE) was established in 2001 with the vision of conducting cutting-edge research, education and training in biomedical and bioengineering and basic biological science is among top in India, having undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degree programs. IIT Kanpur has set up the Startup Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC), aiming to aid innovation, research, and entrepreneurial activities in technology-based areas. SIIC helps business Start-ups to develop their ideas into commercially viable products. A team of students, working under the guidance of faculty members of the institute and scientists of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have designed and built India's first nano satellite Jugnu, which was successfully launched in orbit on 12 Oct 2011 by ISRO's PSLV-C18. Recently, Center for Engineering in Medicine is set up at IITK campus integrate departments of engineering, bioscience and bioengineering, sciences, medical school and hospital, cognitive science, and incubation center. Now, IITK has taken a forward step with International Graduate Education and Research in Biomedical Engineering, and Biomedical Science in partnership with Drexel University of Philadelphia (United States).
