Becoming a Resilient Scientist Webinar Series
Fall 2023
August 29, 2023
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) is a division of the Office of Intramural Research (OIR), Office of the Director (OD). Our mission is to enhance the training experience of students and fellows on all of the NIH campuses. We work closely with the Training Offices in the NIH Institutes and Centers to help trainees in the Intramural Research Program (IRP) develop scientific and professional skills that will enable them to become leaders in the biomedical research community. (The IRP is the sum of all the research projects carried out by NIH investigators and trainees in NIH facilities.)
We provide services to multiple groups:
- Current trainees in programs in the NIH IRP
- Potential applicants to training programs at the NIH
- Investigators and staff at the NIH
- Trainees and investigators outside the NIH (in the extramural community)
The NIH OITE offers a Becoming a Resilient Scientist series of webinars and small group discussions to help you develop the confidence and resilience you need to navigate challenging situations in school, work, and life. While the series is geared toward biomedical science, the information is relevant for all! The series consists of five webinars, each linked to a drop-in small-group discussion the following week. The webinars will highlight strategies needed for academic success and for thriving in research and healthcare careers. We will discuss the cultivation of skills to help you realize resilience and identify and deal with obstacles that get in your way. The material discussed will be helpful to individuals starting out, transitioning to their next experience, or mentoring others. While you may participate in any of the webinars, it is best to participate in the entire series. Concepts and themes will be developed throughout the series, and you will be able to integrate, engage with, and refine the information from the individual sessions. Data show that trainees who attended most of the sessions of the earlier "Becoming a Resilient Scientist Series" reported that they had become more resilient, were better able to handle stress and conflict in their lives, and would recommend the series highly to their colleagues.
The Fall 2023 Becoming a Resilient Scientist Series workshops and group discussions in the series are:
Unit I: An Introduction to Resilience and Wellness
Unit II: Exploring our Self-Talk: Cognitive Distortions and Imposter Fears
Unit III: Self-Advocacy and Assertiveness for Scientists
Unit IV: Developing Feedback Resilience
Unit V: Managing Up to Maximize Mentoring Relationships
Unit I Begins on Thursday, September 14, 2023!
