Winter Dance Concerts

January 16, 2013

The Dance Program will present two exciting concerts this winter with the Drexel Dance Ensemble’s Surrounding Us, and FreshDance’s New Episode. The concerts will feature over 80 dancers and the choreography of established dance professionals, Dance faculty, and students.

Surrounding Us will feature three pieces choreographed by local professionals, including Leah Stein, director of Leah Stein Dance Company and Tania Isaac, Dance faculty member and director of Tania Isaac Dance. Tania Isaac’s choreography is inspired by Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu, the provocative feminist artist whose work will be the subject of the inaugural exhibition in the new Pearlstein Gallery located in the URBN Annex. Olive Prince, Dance faculty member and director of Olive Prince Dance, has choreographed a Marcelle Duchamp-inspired dance that features just one set-piece: string. Also, senior Dance major Lauren Bilski, recently crowned ‘Miss Philadelphia’, will perform a solo dedicated to her awareness of those with disabilities.

The freshman dance ensemble, FreshDance, will present New Episode. Works will include a new piece choreographed by Meredith Rainey, former principal dancer for the Pennsylvania Ballet and director of Carbon Dance Theatre, and Drexel dance faculty member Lucinda Lea. Lea’s choreography will feature a reconstruction of the 1840s ‘Pis de Quart’ which was originally done with four prima ballerinas.

The Dance Ensemble’s concert, Surrounding Us, is Thursday, January 24th, Friday, January 25th, and Saturday January 26th, all at 8 PM. FreshDance’s New Episode is Saturday, January 26th at 3 PM and Sunday, January 27th at 1 PM. Tickets are $10 for the general public, and $5 for students with ID for each performance. Tickets are available at www.danceboxoffice.com or by calling 215.895.2787. Both concerts will take place in the Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
