Over four decades urban historian Sam Bass Warner, Jr. has written rich and nuanced accounts of how American cities develop and function. Among his many publications are: Private City: Philadelphia in Three Periods of Its Growth (1968), The Urban Wilderness (1972), The Way We Really Live (1977), and Greater Boston: Adapting Regional Traditions to the Present (2001). His classic study, Streetcar Suburbs (1962), remains a standard text at universities everywhere. Dr. Warner has taught at Boston University, Brandeis University and the University of Washington. Since 1994 he has been a visiting professor in the Department of Urban Studies & Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
