Cultural Leadership Guest Speaker Series: The Art Museum in Modern Times

Sir Charles Saumarez Smith started his career teaching design history at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He has been Director of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery in London and was most recently Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts. He has written widely on architecture and museums.

For over 25 years, Mark Brack has taught architectural history in Drexel’s Architecture program. He created the department’s four-term Architecture and Society series that surveys the history of world architecture from the prehistoric through the 20th century. He is also the coordinator of the Arfaa Lecture Series and has directed several charrettes that attracted student participation from across the University.

Derek Gillman is Distinguished Teaching Professor, Art History and Museum Leadership, and Senior Adviser to the President for University Collections. He was President of the Barnes Foundation from 2006–13, and of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 2001–06. He was involved in two of the building projects discussed in The Art Museum in Modern Times.
