Alex Valiga

Whitaker International Fellow to Switzerland 2014

Biomedical Engineering BS, 2015

Alex's research experience began here at Drexel as a member of Dr. Adrian Shieh's laboratory of tumor microenviroment. It was during this time that he developed an interest in using biomedical engineering to study cancer biology. Following his experience there, Alex moved on to a position at The Wistar Institute where he was able to study the molecular mechanisms predicting melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma metastasis; work that has been published in the journals of Molecular and Cellular Proteomics and Cancer Discovery.

During the Spring/Summer of 2014, Alex will be working in the laboratory of Dr. Reinhard Dummer within the Department of Dermatology at the University of Zürich, Switzerland. While there, he will focus on the development of a screening assay to improve the diagnosis and prognosis of melanoma progression from congenital melanocytic nevi.
