About Me

Drexel faculty mentor: Michele Marcolongo

Carli Moorehead completed both a BS in biomedical engineering and a Master’s thesis in materials engineering, under the guidance of Dr. Michele Marcolongo. Carli’s first experience with research was as a STAR Scholar with Dr. Ken Barbee, studying the effect of nitric oxide on wound healing. During her time at Drexel, she conducted research on both bulk ceramics – studying strong magnetic fields can be used to engineer microstructure through co-ops at the Army Research Lab – and synthetic proteoglycans – as a student researcher in the Drexel Biomaterials Lab studying collagen-proteoglycan interactions. Carli recieved a Fulbright Study/Research Grant to conduct research on injectable bioceramic scaffolds for bone regeneration with novel adaptive-responsive properties due to magnetic additives at ISTEC-CNR, Faenza, RA. Carli plans to pursue a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Washington - Seattle under Dr. Dwayne Arola, studying crack-tolerant ceramic composite materials for a variety of applications including dental repair and structural components.
