Are you interested in study, research, or co-op abroad in world regions outside Western Europe and Australia/New Zealand? Want to study or become more proficient in a critical language such as Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, or Swahili ?
Learn more about the Boren Awards for International Study and Critical Language Scholarships - two great opportunities that support linguistic and cultural immersion abroad!
- Boren Awards fund undergraduate and graduate US citizens to study less commonly taught languages in world regions that are critical to U.S. national security. The awards promote long term cultural and linguistic immersion in countries in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren applicants should be highly motivated individuals interested in working in areas of U.S. national interest. Boren awardees commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
- The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) offers intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and to apply their critical language skills in their future careers. To be eligible for the CLS, you must be a U.S. citizen, and enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of application.
