Fry USSquash Board

Drexel President John A. Fry has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of US Squash.

The man who brought the U.S. Open Squash Championships to Drexel University three years ago will now serve as the leader of the sport’s national governing body. The Board of Directors of US Squash announced that it has elected Drexel President John A. Fry to serve as the 45^th chairman in the association’s 109-year history.

“We’re so fortunate as an organization to have President Fry on the US Squash Board. His leadership has advanced the sport on so many levels, including accelerating the path to making the U.S. Open the most prestigious tournament in the world,” said Kevin Klipstein, president and CEO of US Squash.  

As both a player and enthusiast, Fry’s longstanding affinity for the sport has driven its growth at Drexel and in the Philadelphia region in recent years. The University added men’s and women’s squash as varsity sports in 2011, the same year that the U.S. Open Squash Championships claimed Drexel as their home in a three-year hosting agreement.

Squash is a family affair for the Frys. All three Fry children are avid squash players, including Nat, who is entering his freshman season as a member of Drexel’s varsity men’s squash team. And his older sister Mia was a four-year member of the women’s varsity squash team at Williams College.

“I’m honored to be chosen for this position of responsibility within the US Squash organization,” Fry said. “It has been a pleasure to see the growth of the sport during my time on the board, and I will continue the efforts of my predecessors to introduce this great game to new generations of players and fans.”

Fry, who has been a member of the US Squash Board of Directors since 2010, replaces Peter Lasusa, Jr., who completed his four-year term as chairman this fall.

The Delaware Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships will commence their third year at Drexel on Oct. 9 with the defending women’s champion, and the world’s top-ranked female, Nicol David vying for a purse of $115,000 against an exemplary women’s field. Eight of the top 10 players in the world are among the field on the men’s side also competing for a $115,000 purse during the two-week affair at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
