More than 165 employer organizations will line up to recruit from more than 1300 students and alumni at Drexel’s Fall Career Fair. Employers will be recruiting for full-time and co-op jobs. The fair will be held on Wednesday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in the Recreation Center Complex located at 33rd and Market streets. The best fields for full-time jobs promise to be information technology, computer engineering and chemical engineering, according to Peter Franks, executive director of Drexel’s Steinbright Career Development Center. Strong participation from oil and gas companies, pharmaceuticals and business organizations are noted for this year’s fair, according to Franks.“We are seeing a mix in the size of companies recruiting our graduates and recent alumni,” said Franks. “We are experiencing a significant growth in the number of full-time jobs for graduating seniors and young alumni than in the last couple of years.”Graduates with degrees in the fields with the most demand—IT, computer engineering and chemical engineering—are averaging starting salaries between $60,000 and $70,000 annually, according the National Association for Colleges and Employers (NACE). They are among the highest average starting salaries, and their average starting salary offers soared in comparison to other disciplines. At Drexel, where students gain professional experience before they graduate through the cooperative education program, demand (number of jobs available) outpaces supply (number of students to fill the jobs) in the information technology field. “We have more jobs available in the IT area for both co-op students and full-time job seekers,” said Franks. Judging from the employers lining up for the career fair as well as the close ties Drexel’s SCDC staff keeps with employers in the Philadelphia region, nationally and internationally, the trends in local jobs parallel the national trends. For example, a higher number of business organizations are showing up for the career fair and nationally finance and accounting majors saw their average salary offers rise. In order for students to be fully prepared for their interviews and target specific employers according to the job they seek, a website has been created that lists all employer organizations attending the career fair and indicates what type of positions each organization is planning to fill. More than 300,000 college students attend more than 83 higher education institutions in Greater Philadelphia. Among them, Drexel University has one of the largest academic career fairs. The Steinbright Career Development Center maintains strong ties with local, national and international business through Drexel’s co-operative education program.
