Amid an uncertain time for the future of COVID-19, and whether new variants will appear, a recently published prediction formula — built using data from 1,102 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in 20 hospitals nationwide — now gives a better estimation about an individual’s projected disease outlook and could help the research community understand why some individuals have a level of natural immunity and why others are more susceptible to severe infection.

Researchers from Drexel University’s College of Arts and Sciences and College of Medicine have found a potential new therapeutic target for Alzheimer’s disease. Expanding on their previous research on Tip60 histone acetyltransferase (HAT), known as the Tip60 enzyme, which controls genes that promote learning and memory in the brain, the Drexel research team generated small molecular compounds that activate Tip60 and restore deficits in the brain found in Alzheimer’s disease patients, such as gene expression programs linked to learning, memory and neurodegeneration.

A new exhibition in Drexel University’s Rincliffe Gallery explores the unique role of Army engineers during World War I, focusing on college-aged students in Philadelphia and institutions like Drexel, that played a role in supporting the war effort. Following the story of a local college student — from his training at the armory in Philadelphia to the trenches of the Western Front — the exhibition shows how vital engineers were to war effort and how pivoting to support U.S. involvement in WWI laid the foundation for Drexel’s distinctive experiential educational model.
