Heard Around Campus — January

A lot has happened at Drexel during the first month of 2017, including new changes to Drexel’s campus that will probably affect your walking route.

Here's what was heard around campus during this month. 

“State of the University 2017 and Beyond” Town Hall

President John Fry and key members of his cabinet held a town hall meeting for faculty and staff on Jan. 11 to discuss the ways in which Drexel’s enrollment and retention strategy has affected the University and will continue to impact Drexel in the coming years. Graduate College Aims to Recognize Drexel’s Most Deserving Teaching Assistants

Do you work with a graduate student teaching assistant who regularly goes above and beyond? Nominate them for a Teaching Assistant Excellence Award, for which the Graduate College is currently accepting nominations, now through April 1.

Students, faculty and professional staff are encouraged to nominate Drexel’s highly effective teaching assistants for recognition via the online survey.

Construction Updates:

Korman Quad Closures Due to Construction

Pedestrian access to the Korman Quad has been further restricted due to construction on the Korman Center addition. Access points to the various buildings around the Quad are:

• The Korman Center may be accessed only from the 33rd Street entrance at the rear of the building
• The Pearlstein Business Learning Center may be accessed from the front/south entrance facing the Korman Center and the east side entrance; there will be no direct access from Korman to Pearlstein without walking around the corner of 33rd and Market streets
• Gerri C. LeBow Hall may be accessed from the two entrances along Market Street; the porch area that opens to the Quad on the south side of LeBow Hall will remain open but will only be accessible from inside the building
• The Disque and Stratton halls lobby/connector will be accessible from Perelman Plaza only

The Study Hotel at University City

Earlier this month, the Study Hotel at University City began accepting reservations at 33rd and Chestnut streets. The 10-story, 45,00-square foot newly completed boutique hotel was designed by Philadelphia-based DIGSAU architects and features 212 rooms, a ground-floor restaurant called CO-OP and over 7,000 square feet of event space. The hotel was developed and fully funded by Hospitality 3 under a ground lease agreement with Drexel University.

SEPTA’s 32nd Street Improvements

If you have walked northbound up 32nd Street recently, you may have noticed a makeover on the east side of the street between Arch and Winter streets. SEPTA recently repaired the sidewalk there and has upgraded the fencing adjacent to the rail yards.
